Sydney (as Cassidy): Last time on A Knight of Shreds and Patches, I took Pallie up top of a moon rock and we had the kind of conversation that’s hard to have with someone you don’t have a lot of trust and relationship bond with.
Nick: Zee-o - It is snowing, and you are sad. The land had thawed a week ago. Life was returning to the wilderness around the Patina's winter camp. You had seen several interesting natural developments in your time observing, but here it is snowing again. A sudden barometric change and a cold front sweeping in from the North has flakes drifting from the sky and covering the budding green. You are standing at the mouth of the excavated garage entrance, looking out into the world as it fades to white. A light dusting sprinkles on the windshield of the half track truck parked in the tree line where you know Wyatt is sleeping. What do you look like? And what are you thinking?
Aly: Zee-o is not human. Zee-o stands about five foot ten and has a humanoid shape. Two arms, two legs, five fingers, five toes, all the proper joints, all the proper skeletal structure for a human to have, but it is all made of metal and synthetic material. The majority of the plating on the body is sort of a matte black metallic material and the skeletal frame that peeks out at certain joints and different spots on the body is sleek, shining gunmetal gray, and there are little bits and bobs and edges of rose gold peeking out as well. Zee-o has a neutral expression on their face. The face has a human shape to it; a ridge for eyebrows, a nose, two eyes, a slightly parted mouth. The expression is blank, but if you look at it long enough, there's an element of almost interest or discovery or even sometimes at the right angle and the right light, wonder and curiosity. The eyes are not eyes per se and they're not screens either. There is a glow within each of the eye sockets - a soft white, bluish white LED sort of glow from somewhere within the chassis.
Zee-o wears clothes. Zee-o has these generic trousers on, wide leg probably with pockets. They look thrifted and there is a tunic length coat on over the torso that Zee-o has which has sort of a drapey shawl hood attached to the jacket that often is worn up and wrapped around to better disguise the fact that Zee-o is not human and that other non human AI's and synthetics out in the world these days, don't look as human as Zee-o does. Zee-o is looking out at the snow and across the clearing to where the truck sits, where they know Wyatt is because that's always where Wyatt is. And Zee-o is very quiet, which is unusual for them. They are struggling to understand a series of events that happened earlier that don't seem to add up even with the time that they have spent with Wyatt and Pallie and the rest of the Patina. And they are very quiet as they think through what happened and try to understand their place in all of that.
Nick: As you sit there, mind whirling, you are interrupted in your reverie by your guide through the world. The person who has explained your existence. Pallie, what do you look like? And how do you interrupt Zee-o's reverie?
Rhi: Pallie is in her early 50s. She's got steel gray hair that is cropped pretty short. It's starting to grow out a bit. It was cut pretty roughly with a knife probably. Her right arm is robotic and both of her hands, both the flesh and blood one and the metal one, are marked with scuffs and scars and dings of the signs of somebody who spent a lifetime working with her hands. She always dresses very practically; sturdy boots, lots of pockets, good jacket. Pallie does not intentionally interrupt Zee-o. What Pallie does to interrupt this is drop a wrench off the side of the Knight and it goes klang klang klunk fump to the ground. [clanging noises] And then there's just a beat of silence and a [deep sigh as Pallie] and then some additional thunks as Pallie starts to climb down from where she had been perched atop the large mech to retrieve her fallen tool.
Aly (as Zee-o): Pallie?
Rhi (as Pallie): Oh! Hey Zee! How's it going?
Aly (as Zee-o): Did you drop something?
Rhi (as Pallie): I yes, I did right there.
Aly (as Zee-o): Do you need me to get it?
Rhi (as Pallie): Um, well, if you wouldn't mind and save me the trip climbing all the way down.
Aly: Zee-o crosses the garage, picks up the wrench and moves closer to the base of where Pallie has climbed up. Zee looks at the wrench and then offers it.
Rhi: I think Pallie still has to hop down a little bit to get within reach. And will take it with a smile like,
Rhi (as Pallie): [happy relieved sigh] Thanks. I didn't know you were out there. You want to come up?
Aly (as Zee-o): For what?
Rhi (as Pallie): Company?
Aly (as Zee-o): Company?
Rhi (as Pallie): Mmhmm.
Aly (as Zee-o): What are you doing?
Rhi (as Pallie): I am trying to get this big thing to use its brain.
Aly (as Zee-o): Does it have one?
Rhi (as Pallie): [sigh] Not a brain the way that us humans do and I don't think a brain the way that you do either. But it's got a you know, a central control system that tells all the different parts of it to move, so it's like a brain. But right now it's not working.
Aly: Zee-o considers the Knight in its state of disarray and disrepair and work in progress, and then inclines their head and climbs up to be where Pallie is.
Rhi: I think that we're Pallie is not in the head, specifically. Um... I think that these mechs were built because the instinct is to shoot for the head, because that's always the vulnerable part if you're shooting at a humanoid figure and so I think that for these mechs, all of the important pieces were put into the chest area. There's also just more space there. So she's got a couple of the big chest panels popped off. And there's wires and metal bits and a toolkit and she has a spotlight setup shining into this just mess of mechanical parts. And she kind of settles back in on her perch.
Aly: And Zee-o comes up to where Pallie is, and Zee-o just stands there.
Rhi: Pallie picks up her tablet that she's been taking notes on and taps at it for a bit and then slowly stops and looks up to see that Zee-o is just standing there.
Rhi (as Pallie): You can sit down if you want.
Aly (as Zee-o): Is that better? To sit?
Rhi (as Pallie): Umm...
Rhi: Pallie kinda of frowns. And is like, this is a question I hadn't considered before.
Rhi (as Pallie): Ah, I mean, it's not necessarily better, but if somebody's sitting and you're standing, it can sometimes make the person who's sitting feel like you're kind of looming or hovering and that can make people feel uncomfortable sometimes.
Aly (as Zee-o): I do not think I have the capabilities to hover.
Rhi (as Pallie): Not literally hover.
Aly (as Zee-o): But I should sit.
Rhi (as Pallie): If you're just spending time with somebody casually, yeah, sitting is usually nice.
Aly (as Zee-o): It would make you feel better if I sat?
Rhi (as Pallie): Yeah.
Aly: Zee-o sits, slowly and methodically, and mirrors the position and the way in which Pallie is sitting.
Rhi: I don't think that that escapes Pallie's notice and she shakes her head a little bit and smiles to herself but then will go back to work. And I think this is the point where typically Zee-o would start asking a lot of questions about what Pallie is doing, but tonight is different.
Aly: Yeah, I think that Zee-o is kind of facing what Pallie is doing as though they're watching. But then after a minute of Pallie, tapping away on the interface pad, they slowly tilt their head back towards the entrance of the garage where they can see the truck through the snow. And they kind of just linger in that position for a bit.
Rhi: Yeah, and I think again, it takes a little while for Pallie to notice but eventually she does look up again. And then when she notices, I think she has to lean over a little bit to see the same angle that Zee-o is to look out the door and then she will set the tablet aside and focus her attention on Zee-o.
Rhi (as Pallie): Hey is uh, is everything all right?
Aly (as Zee-o): Everything seems functional.
Rhi (as Pallie): That's not what I meant.
Aly (as Zee-o): Oh?
Rhi (as Pallie): How are you feeling? Emotionally? You seem very quiet.
Aly: Zee-o turns their head slightly back to look at Pallie as though searching her face for answers.
Aly (as Zee-o): Emotionally. I... feel... confused.
Rhi: Pallie will nod and be like,
Rhi (as Pallie): What are you confused about?
Aly (as Zee-o): I am confused about earlier. I do not understand what happened.
Rhi: The realization hits and she nods is like,
Rhi (as Pallie): When Wyatt and I argued?
Aly (as Zee-o): Yes. I was not there for all of the conversation, but when I arrived, both of you were angry. And when you left I tried to explain what I thought, and Wyatt continued to be angry. And then Wyatt left. I do not understand. Why were both of you so angry?
Rhi (as Pallie): [long sigh]
Rhi: I think Pallie leans back and rubs her forehead.
Rhi (as Pallie): [sigh] People can get angry for a lot of reasons. But one of the big reasons is if somebody thinks they're right, and another person thinks they're wrong. And when those two viewpoints conflict, people can get angry about it because they feel like they're not being heard or understood. And that's pretty much what happened with me and Wyatt today.
Aly (as Zee-o): Does it last forever?
Rhi (as Pallie): No, no, no, we'll be fine by tomorrow.
Aly (as Zee-o): What happens when people get angry like this? How does it go away?
Rhi (as Pallie): Well, that's different for every person and every relationship that person has. For me and Wyatt, we shout at each other, and then walk away to cool off, and then uh don't ever really talk about it again, which... not the best approach, really, but it's kind of how we've always done it. But other folks will talk things out. Sometimes, if the thing that they disagree about is big enough and they're angry enough, they might decide they don't want to have any kind of relationship anymore, and somebody might leave.
Aly: Zee-o turns and faces Pallie full on and looks at Pallie.
Aly (as Zee-o): Is Wyatt leaving?
Rhi (as Pallie): No. No, neither of us is going anywhere.
Aly (as Zee-o): How do you know?
Rhi: That does kind of stop her again, and is just
Rhi (as Pallie): Cause I have known Wyatt, a very long time, his whole life. And we have had many, many, many fights like this before. And he hasn't left before. And so based on past experience I have no reason to believe that he would leave now.
Aly (as Zee-o): Are you leaving?
Rhi (as Pallie): No.
Aly (as Zee-o): How do you know?
Rhi (as Pallie): Well I don't want to.
Aly (as Zee-o): Why?
Rhi (as Pallie): Oh, I've got people here that I care about and I want to stay with and work with and help. I've got this,
Rhi: Pats the Knight with her robot hand so it's a bit of a clang, clang, clang.
[hollow clang clang clang]
Rhi: to figure out and get working again. And, I dunno. There's not really anywhere I'd rather be.
Aly: Zee-o looks up at the Knight seeming to consider what Pallie is saying. Doesn't nod or shake their head just sort of lowers their gaze again, still thinking about everything.
Aly (as Zee-o): Wyatt seemed very angry.
Rhi (as Pallie): People express their anger in different ways. Wyatt gets real loud. But there's a saying that people have about well, it started as being about dogs, they would say that they're all bark and no bite. It means it's somebody who's very loud, but isn't actually going to do anything to hurt you.
Aly (as Zee-o): A liar?
Rhi (as Pallie): Not exactly. No. Just sometimes when people have a lot of emotions, they get loud, because that's how they can express those emotions. But it doesn't mean that they're going to do anything to hurt the other person by leaving or attacking them, they're just shouting. Wyatts like that.
Aly (as Zee-o): Is that why Wyatt yelled at me?
Rhi (as Pallie): Wyatt yelled at you?
Aly (as Zee-o): Yes. After you left, I tried to interpret what was happening and Wyatt yelled at me. He has never yelled at me before.
Rhi ( as Pallie): [exasperated sigh]
Aly (as Zee-o): Sometimes he says things under his breath, but he's never yelled at me before.
Rhi: Pallie, her casual, relaxed demeanor has evaporated and her shoulders have tensed a bit, mouth is pressed together in a thin line and she's just like,
Rhi (as Pallie): I... [sigh] I'll talk to Wyatt. He shouldn't have yelled at you. You didn't have anything to do with that argument.
Aly (as Zee-o): He said I should not have gotten involved.
Rhi (as Pallie): [long suffering sigh]
Aly (as Zee-o): He said you should have left me in Allium.
Rhi (as Pallie): Oh, I'm definitely going to have words with him.
Aly (as Zee-o): Should I have stayed and Allium?
Rhi (as Pallie): No. No. You... [sigh] I don't think that the people there were gonna be able to help you figure yourself out. Wyatt ughff. Wyatt doesn't understand. Well, he doesn't understand what you are and he is not always the most open minded about new things. He, he'll come around eventually, I think. But I don't think he quite knows what to make of you yet. And he, his reasons don't matter. He shouldn't have said that.
Aly (as Zee-o): I think Wyatt hurt my feelings.
Rhi (as Pallie): Yeah. Yeah it sounds like he did.
Aly (as Zee-o): I wish I didn't feel this.
Rhi: So I think Pallie scoots over and starts to move her arm like she's gonna put it around Zee-o's shoulder and then stops, but is sitting a lot closer than they were before.
Rhi (as Pallie): That happens uh sometimes when, well when you have any kind of relationship with somebody, even really good friends or very close family will hurt each other sometimes.
Aly (as Zee-o): Why?
Rhi (as Pallie): [sigh] Cause people are complicated and have a lot of feelings and thoughts and sometimes they're not good at expressing them and sometimes they disagree, and most of the time, folks don't mean it, don't mean to hurt each other. But it happens sometimes.
Aly (as Zee-o): And you forgive him.
Rhi (as Pallie): I do. Yeah.
Aly (as Zee-o): Why?
Rhi (as Pallie): Cause he's my brother.
Aly (as Zee-o): I do not understand.
Rhi (as Pallie): Uhhhhh... It's hard to explain I think, it's uh, we've known each other for a very long time. I've taken care of him a lot. He's gotten me out of a fair few bad scrapes. And sometimes when somebody hurts you, you make a decision that the relationship is important enough that you forgive them for what they did. If you never forgave anybody for hurting you you'd end up very alone.
Aly (as Zee-o): But it is not better to be alone.
Rhi (as Pallie): No, it's not. So, people hurt each other and people apologize and people forgive each other and we keep on not being alone.
Nick: We see outside that the snow has gotten heavier and the garage has become almost cozy at this point. There is a small rumbling space heater set up at the foot of the Knight that's reclined on the ground. And some of the armor has been replaced since the last time we've seen it. It's looking to be in a little bit better shape, but a long way from mint condition. And Pallie as you've been talking with Zee-o you've also been hooking up the last of a daisy chain of interconnected circuits that should provide central control. What does completing the Knight mean to you? And how does the garage look after a long winter of inhabiting it and working in it?
Rhi: So Pallie keeps a pretty organized shop, as much as she can in this environment. So there's a lot of boxes and crates that are labeled and are brimming with different parts. There's tools hanging up on half of a broken pegboard. But if there was to be sort of a time lapse over the course of this season, just the sheer amount of stuff in here has increased drastically. Pallie has had to bring in a lot of tools and equipment to get this thing nearly working again. I think in a lot of ways, getting this thing working, it doesn't mean that she's gonna stop working on it, you know, machines always need tinkering and repairing and improving, but getting it working again, part of it is that this will help the group. If we have something like this, we can take on like some really big jobs, things that will pay well, things that could maybe finally turn our fortunes around. But it's also, on kind of a personal level, this is the biggest, not just in size which it is also that, but just kind of in terms of complexity this is the biggest project that Pallie's ever pulled off. She has built and repaired a lot of things in her 50 odd years and this is the most technically complex. She didn't build it from scratch, but it still feels kind of like her masterpiece.
Nick: And with these thoughts of your masterpiece, you connect the last bit of the synapses that make this war machine go. And I need you to roll me a Mechanic's check.
Rhi: All right, what's the difficulty?
Nick: It's gonna be hard.
Rhi: I have two yellows and two greens.
Rhi: Five successes, and one threat.
Nick: Five successes and one threat. You know that your work on this machine has been careful. You have taken more time to complete these tasks than it necessarily would have because you double and triple checked your work. There's parts here that if they broke, would have to be fabricated, if that. And you have done everything you can to make sure that this thing is able to run. You know as you plug in this last bit of wiring harness and connect the central power source, that everything should work, everything is connected.
[plug in noise]
Nick: But you get no indication from the machine that anything has changed from the silent hulk that it has been all winter.
Rhi: There's a moment of, she plugs it in and then waits and then waits. And then is just like, it's like when you want to curse but there's a kid around. [laughs]
Aly: So I think there's that hesitation and Zee-o goes,
Aly (as Zee-o): Did you turn it on?
Rhi (as Pallie): [deep sigh] I tried to and it should have worked. Everything is where it's supposed to be. It should have worked, and it's not.
Aly (as Zee-o): Should you turn it off and turn it on again?
Rhi: [long deep inhale and then laughter] Pallie is -
Aly: Is like steam coming out of her ears?
Rhi: Yeah, I mean, it's that
Rhi (as Pallie's internal thoughts): [voice intensifying throughout] I cannot yell. They wouldn't understand. I can't get angry. I was just explaining anger and hurting each other, and it would be very inappropriate for me to do that right now, but oh my god, are you kidding me?? I'm just gonna count backwards from 10.
Rhi: And then she just lets out a breath, and she unplugs the thing
Rhi: and plugs it in again.
[plug in noise]
Nick: Zee-o, you sense something. Not like something awakening, but like something rising from death to simply sleeping. There's something about this large machine that calls to you.
Aly: Zee-o looks up abruptly at the hulking mass of the Knight and sees it suddenly, almost as though for the first time. And Zee-o, looks at it, and looks at Pallie, and then looks out into the snow at the truck, which is slowly becoming consumed by snow flurries, and then looks at the Knight again and something makes sense for some reason. Zee-o gets up and reaches out, puts both hands out on the Knight with with fingers spread and says,
Aly (as Zee-o): Where did this come from?
Rhi (as Pallie): Uhhmmm. Well,
Rhi: Pallie stands up and points up at the shoulder of the machine where there is a symbol engraved into the metal. It's fairly large, it looks like it was meant to be seen from a distance on this mech. It's a very sleek, stylized, modern tree with branches curving upward and wrapped around the tree with the tail at the base and the head coming up from the branches at the top is a snake. And Pallie says,
Rhi (as Pallie): Uh, I don't know exactly what it's called. But well, it's from the same place that you are.
Rhi: And she will turn and point at Zee-o's shoulder which has a very similar symbol on it, though not exactly identical.
Aly: I think Zee-o sees this on the mech and then turns and shrugs that shoulder on themself out of the jacket they're wearing and looks at the symbol on their own shoulder and it is almost exactly the same. Zee-o is primarily like a matte texture black but I think the symbol on their shoulder is inlaid with glossy black.
Aly: Almost with a dark silver under sheen to it so that it does catch light if it's exposed. And in the center of the tree, in a space where the snake is not wrapped around it, is a five pointed star. And so Zee-o shrugs their shoulder out and looks at their symbol and then looks up at the mech again and looks at Pallie and says,
Aly (as Zee-o): Can I help?
Rhi (as Pallie): Um... If you know of a way that you can help, you're welcome to try cause I am all out of ideas.
Aly (as Zee-o): All of the parts are there.
Rhi (as Pallie): Yep.
Aly (as Zee-o): But the brain is dormant.
Rhi (as Pallie): Maybe? I haven't been able to get a read on it. Have you?
Aly: Zee-o turns and does what Pallie has seen them do as a kind of external scan, where there's like a flicker from the eyes to indicate that a different mode is being operated from within, and Zee-o scans the mech peripherally and then stops and puts their hands back on the chassis of the mech. There is something in Zee-o that allows them to interface sometimes with other pieces of technology and I think Zee-o reaches out to the mech using that signal. If Zee-o were human it would be like telepathy, it would be like a psychic or a psionic reach for some kind of response to the mech, but because Zee-o is not human, it is neither psychic nor psionic. It is just a bit of software or a type of signal that can communicate device from device. So Zee-o puts their hands on the mech and reaches out with the signal into the mech's insides, into the software, into the hard drive and routes around for the missing piece.
Nick: And it's like that last puzzle piece snapping into place that was just slightly offset. The bit of logic, the bit of the signal within, you're not sure exactly what you do, but the mech comes to life.
[power up noise]
Nick: The lights on the cockpit in which you two are standing around, light up. There's a gentle hum and you can sense life within this machine.
Aly: I think Zee-o looks up as the lights come on and the humming fills the room. And Zee-o looks up at the face of the mech, which is not really a face it's more just a shape that would indicate that's where the head is, and Zee-o lets go and steps back from the chest and says,
Aly (as Zee-o): There. Good morning.
Rhi: Pallie doesn't entirely hear Zee-o speak. Pallie is [laughs] staring at this thing in a state of shock, jaw dropped, just looking at the lights and then after a couple stunned seconds just starts laughing. It's just pure joy. Lets out one of those really excited whoops and swings around and I think it just sort of without thinking grabs Zee-o's hands and is just like,
Rhi (as Pallie): You are amazing! You did it!
Aly (as Zee-o): You did it, Pallie.
Rhi (as Pallie): Team effort. All right, let's, um um um what did, what did, what did you even do?
Aly (as Zee-o): I do not know. There was something not right. And I looked inside to make sure that it was aligned. It is hard to describe.
Rhi (as Pallie): Oh, it’s, we’ll, we'll talk about it later, we’ll we'll figure it out. Oh, you are just...
Aly (as Zee-o): [interrupting] What does it do?
Rhi (as Pallie): [happy sigh] We're gonna find out. Uh, you are just a miracle, aren't you? Uh grab a, grab a drill. Help me get this armor plate back on.
Aly: And so Zee-o goes for the drill and helps Pallie realign the armor plate and attach it.
Nick: And with the mech fully assembled, the Knight's cockpit sits open; the seat and controls beckoning to Pallie in an irresistible way.
Rhi: Yeah, she will tell Zee-o to
Rhi (as Pallie): Stand back I don't wanna, I don't want to step on you, but
Aly (as Zee-o): Pallie, is it safe?
Rhi (as Pallie): I have no idea. But there is only one way to find out!
Rhi: And Pallie is gonna climb up into the cockpit.
Nick: The seat, which you've sat in many times tinkering, feels like it fits better than it did before. And the two main controls slide into your hands in a comfortable grip. And almost intuitively, you guide the mech to its towering feet, all twenty feet tall of this robot. And you don't close the cockpit, but guide this machine forward, haltingly at first and then more comfortably. As you push your way through the semi excavated doorway and the freshly fallen snow and walk the mech out into the center of the camp where you have been set up all winter and display the mech proudly for the Patina to see.
Aly: So Zee-o does stepaside as Pallie climbs into the cockpit and as the mech starts out, Zee-o experiences a wave of what can only be described as anxiety. And Zee-o follows Pallie out into the snow. And I think Zee-o, worried about what the mech actually does because they don't understand what it would be for yet, reaches out with the signal again and say through something in the cockpit.
Aly (as Zee-o): Pallie, are you all right?
Rhi (as Pallie): Oh, coms! Hey, uh, coms, coms. coms.
Rhi: Presses a button.
Rhi (as Pallie): Can you can you hear me?
Nick: A bunch of lights flash on the outside.
Rhi (as Pallie): Huh, no. How about this one? Can you hear me?
Aly (as Zee-o): Pallie?
Rhi (as Pallie): Is that a yes? Can you hear me?
Aly (as Zee-o): Yes, I can hear you.
Rhi (as Pallie): Oh, good. Okay. Coms are working.
Aly (as Zee-o): Are you all right?
Rhi (as Pallie): Yes, yes. Zee-o I am more all right than I have been in a very long time. Oh, this is, this is amazing. Oh, thank you, whatever you did. Oh, wow. This thing is just incredible.
Aly (as Zee-o): Pallie.
Rhi (as Pallie): Yeah?
Aly (as Zee-o): Are you happy?
Rhi (as Pallie): Very, very happy.
Aly (as Zee-o): Good. That is what I want.
Nick: And we see Zee-o standing in the now shattered doorway of the garage. And you see the slow wind down of the window on the half track as Wyatt rolls down the window of the driver's side and looks out at his sister triumphantly in this war machine. And you see Iokua stride over to the truck from where he was crouched by the fire and lean nonchalantly against it. He looks at Wyatt whose jaw is hanging open and says,
Nick (as Iokua): You didn't think she was going to pull it off, did you?
Nick: And Wyatt just slowly rolls the window back up without saying anything. And Pallie you see this exchange, you can't hear it but you know them both well enough to know the gist. And you know that the Knight was the only thing holding you and your friends here. And you know that Wyatt is gonna be ready to move on and put it to use.
Rhi: Yep. But I think right now, Pallie is just too excited about this to really care about Wyatt being grumpy or their argument or plans for the future, any of it. This thing is working again and she can make it walk. That is enough for tonight.
Aly: And I think Zee-o steps out of the shelter of the doorway of the garage watching Pallie maneuver the mech, laughing and joyful. And Zee-o steps out into the snow and like holds their hand out for snow to fall into their palm and watches as it slowly super slowly dissolves. It's not as fast as if it would be to a human palm, but it still dissolves. And I think Zee-o contemplates that for a moment.
Nick: And Zee-o, it is snowing and you're not sure how you feel.
